I’m an ex-marching band trombone player guy, from a very active, choreograph-heavy school team, so I like this sort of thing, and if you don’t, back to legislating the womb for you. However, if you do, dig the Gren Machine Band from George Mason University doing Rage. Nice work! I’d have skipped the guitars and done it full field gear, but hey.

Speaking of field gear, this team from Kyoto owned it. Around 4 minutes in, they could be on Dancing with the Toles…

i was in a cab on the way to work this morning because my ankle’s sprained, and the little video screen of advertising showed a quick bit of an iPad game called "TEMPLE RUN." it looked kinda fun, so i went to the appStoe on my phone and discovered that it’s a free download.

i gotta say, having played it a bunch already today cause i’m ahead of schedule on a huge project, this is a brilliant little game. for one thing, the concept is super simple — your character is running away from some giant bugaboos and collecting coins at the same time. so sorta like pac-man meets indiana jones, but from an overhead-and-behind viewpoint. you have to jump over and/or slide under obstacles in your way, and you have to keep from getting eaten by the bugaboos or falling into a pit or hitting fire or whatever. SO simple.

the controls are really easy. swipe up to jump, down to slide, left or right to turn, and tilt the screen to move left and right on the path.

as you collect coins and complete challenges and run further distances, you get the opportunity to upgrade your character (which i haven’t done yet, but i have to imagine you’d get a faster guy or a guy who can jump higher or whatever), or move on to different environments.

one REALLY cool thing is that the map you’re running on changes every time. i have to imagine that there are a limited number of maps, but my point is that if you run for a while and then die, and you hit "run again," you do NOT go back to the same map you were just on. i LOOOVE that. keeps you guessing.

between the conceit and the controls, this game can be played one-handed on an iPhone or ipodTouch (sorry, no android version yet), which is a HUGE sell to me. it would be more cumbersome on that other iThing, but i don’t think it would be a single bit less fun.

as a free, simple, one-handed (phone/touch) game, this is nothing but win. give it a shot. 10/10 CLANKS! so far.

Where Did It Come From is a new series in which Lung and I attempt to decode our ‘moon language’ of internal references, to the amusement, and sometimes bewilderment, of the R3 Forum community.

What I Tole You!

The details may be shaky, but this is how it went down: we were in Santa Barbara, I believe for a friend’s wedding, and stumbled upon this bumper sticker on a jalopy by the beach. Now, my memory is different than this photo, but to be fair, gin was involved then and now. But I remember Twowingsmambo stumbling around on the sidewalk next to the curb in a fit of herniating laughter over it, and I also remember it to be a fairly weathered, longer bumper sticker where the words in question were all that remained. But this evidence, carefully, tirelessly recovered from the stacks of analog photos in my cloffice, is even better. It’s a deliberately made custom sticker. It’s genuine wronglish!

Pat (Twowingsmambo) and I both grew up with Filipino friends and were very familiar with the accent, and while this may seem off-color to the sensitives, being friends of Filipino kids, we all joked around in the accent and made up Filipinglish expressions with those friends. I wouldn’t recommend doing this if you don’t have Filipino friends. Anyway, the term struck us as a very Filipinglish expression (though it could be anything right, including crackeh) and it instantly stuck. Pointing at someone when they ignored your advice and spill cerviche on their shirt: ‘What I tole you!’. A girl in the bar gives your buddy a double-take, after you’ve been pushing him to talk to her, ‘What i Tole!’ and so on.

It eventually bled so far into my family lexicon that it was just something said in the vacuum of anything else.

It can be used to entertain both the Swiss and children alike:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-6pb4x2 … 0O0V_Pgai8

And it even became the name of my post-it note illustration journal, thusly:

http://www.whatitoleyou.com

So there. You’ve been tole!

previous ironLung/WR moonLanguage translation posts have included "PLESS, PLESS," "UP IN THERE," and "CONCEALED DOPE." today’s installment … "thumbs up thrown."

now at face value, "thumbs up thrown" is pretty self-explanatory, but the birth of the exact phrasing is quite hilarious.

back in 2005, prior to the relaunch of the knight rider series, there was talk of a knight rider movie. i posted about it HERE, complete with the most awesomeWrong picture of michael knight and KITT that i could find (reposted above as my banner pic).

and in response to that banner pic, WR quipped the most exceptional almost-haiku (6 syllables in the final line, rather than 5) of all time…

in the knee, fuck me!
gray ankle-high tennies, wore he!
thumbs up thrown, to his G.

pretty much the most beautiful construction of words ever, right there, and while you’d expect that "gray ankle-high tennies, wore he" would be the wrongPhrase to catch on – alas, it was "thumbs up thrown." because you don’t simply GIVE a thumbs up. you THROW it. to your g, of course.

Regardless of whether or not you like M. Knight, Will Smith or his son (who looks a lot less annoying now that he appears to have hit puberty, grown 3 feet, and lost the dreads) what I DO like about this first shot from After Earth, a film about a father and son trying to reunite after a post-apocalyptic what have you, is the monochromatic textured body suit. Sick! Black on black! Which, funny enough, is a SugarDVD search…
