The portrait is from a cabinet of curiosities, right? What would be so curious about poor Gregor if he'd died of this injury? Why bother painting it? Getting a portrait done wasn't a cheap exercise, or a quick one, and war wounds were ten a penny in those days! If you look closely you notice he is smiling! I would've thought what happened to Phineas Gage proved beyond all doubt that such a wound was survivable, and there was a kid in the States who lost half his head to a .44, and lived. Baci must've been a pretty tough guy, there's a large scar on top of his head from a previous brush with death. What would be cool to find out is how did the wound affect him? Did he keep the sight in his left eye? Suppose we'll never know..

Ha, thanks.
Well, so far my daughter appears to have quite a sense of humor...
my son looks at me intently and then breaks into gigglefits... but he's 4 months old, so. We just don't KNOW.
He hasn't failed at anything yet, but she has certainly failed to convince us to look away while she raids the cookies...

Great photo, great story! "What I tole you" (with accent) is also a commonly heard expression in our household. It's hard to explain but it just feels good to say it, and it applies to so many situations. Anyway Thom's description of it's origin may be partially true, but I believe it is also a bit misleading. First of all, we were already using this expression frequently when we stumbled upon the bumper sticker, which was why it was so funny. My only regret is that we didn't get to meet the owner of the vehicle to understand how this obscure and wrong phrase had ended up on his jalopy.

Secondly I remember this being in San Luis Obispo, but I could be wrong about that. Good times! What I tole you!
